Some smart cities, smart government and open government gems from last week uncovered by the FreeBalance Strategy and Innovation Group.
HIDDEN COSTS FOR OPEN DATA: Sara Friedman of GCN describes a new study about government open data unforeseen costs. Research led by University of Waterloo professor Peter A. Johnson and McGill University professor Renee Sieber found that “some governments are more likely to avoid opening datasets that need complex assessment or anonymization techniques for GIS concerns.”
PROBLEM WITH CONCEPT OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE? Citizen wellbeing is a goal for smart governments. Can we rely on “EQ” to develop better policy? Lisa Feldman Barrett in Nautilus takes a critical look at emotional intelligence based on neuroscience. “Copious research, from my lab and others, shows that faces and bodies alone do not communicate any specific emotion in any consistent manner. In addition, we now know that the brain doesn’t have separate processes for emotion and cognition, and therefore one cannot control the other.
HOT CITIES NEED TO BECOME SMART CITIES: Sanajana Varghese describes new research on heatwaves in new megacities in the New Statesman. The research, led by Elfatih A. B. Eltahir, the Breene M.Kerr professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), suggests that “climate extremes higher than 40 degrees will become more commonplace in certain parts of the world before the end of the century.”
IoT IN CONNECTED GOVERNMENT: Dr. Gopala Krishna Behara and Raju Myadam of Wipro describe the citizen services and transparency benefits to governments through the effective deployment of Internet of Things technology in Cloud Expo Journal. A detailed reference architecture to provide “guidance for the development of government systems, solutions and application architecture” is provided.
